Introduction

Mitz Mode ("we", "our", or "the app") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what the app needs to work, which permissions it may request, what stays on your device, and when limited technical data is sent to third-party services.

Mitz Mode is an English-language Jewish mitzvah companion for Android and iOS. It includes the classic mitzvah list experience and the embedded Daily Mitzvot Checklist (daily mitzvot, zmanim, seasonal items, weekday prayer/siddur content, blessings, and related tools). This policy covers those features unless a section says otherwise.

What the App Needs

Depending on which features you use, the app may need:

• Internet — optional content updates, crash reporting, and opening links you choose
• Location — GPS permission or a city you pick, for Jewish calendar times (zmanim), Israel vs. diaspora calendar rules, and aiming the optional Kotel-facing compass
• Device motion / compass sensors — magnetometer and related sensors for the optional Kotel-facing arrow (processed on your device)
• Notifications — optional reminders (prayer times, candle lighting, recurring or seasonal mitzvot, Sefirat HaOmer, and kashrut wait timers) and Android media playback controls

You can decline GPS and notifications. Core checklist features still work if you choose a city manually and skip optional reminders. The Kotel compass needs a location (GPS or city) plus working device sensors to aim.

Permissions Used

Internet Access

• Error tracking via Sentry
• Checking for updated mitzvah content from our public GitHub repository
• Opening external links you choose to visit (for example Sefaria or Chabad websites)

Location (GPS)

• Used when you enable GPS or choose a city so the app can calculate Jewish calendar times and zmanim (prayer windows, candle lighting, Shabbat-related times, and similar)
• Also used to aim the optional Kotel-facing compass toward Jerusalem / the Temple Mount area
• Coordinates may help the app apply Israel vs. diaspora calendar customs
• Location is stored on your device as part of your app settings (coordinates, timezone, optional elevation, and a display label)
• We do not operate our own servers that receive or store your location
• You can use manual city selection instead of GPS

Compass / Motion Sensors

• Used only for the optional Kotel-facing arrow while that feature is shown
• Heading is calculated on your device from the phone’s sensors; sensor readings are not uploaded to Beardy Top Productions

Notifications

• Optional prayer-service reminders when Shacharit, Mincha, or Maariv becomes available (when enabled)
• Optional Shabbat / festival candle-lighting reminders (when enabled)
• Optional recurring mitzvah reminders (for example Havdalah, Melave Malka, and Kiddush HaLevana when enabled)
• Optional seasonal mitzvah reminders (for example Chanukah candles or Yom Tov prep when enabled)
• Optional Sefirat HaOmer nightfall reminders (when enabled)
• Optional kashrut wait-timer status and completion alerts (when enabled)
• Optional in-app music playback controls when background audio is playing (Android)
• Reminder content is scheduled on your device from your local settings and calendar times; we do not send those alerts through Beardy Top Productions servers
• You can deny notification permission; core checklist and prayer features still work

Other Device Permissions

• Vibration — optional haptic feedback
• Exact alarms / boot completed (Android) — lets the system fire scheduled reminders on time (including after reboot) when you have enabled them; this is calendar-style scheduling for prayer and mitzvah times, not an alarm-clock product
• Foreground service (media playback) — keeps optional background music playing with a visible notification (Android)
• Network state — lets the app avoid unnecessary network work when offline
• Wake lock (Android) — supports reliable alarms and media playback
• Files / share sheet (when you tap Save, Restore, or Share) — you pick a save location or a backup file through the system Files picker, or send a file/image through the system share sheet. The app does not browse your photo library or other files on its own

Data Collection and Storage

Stored Locally on Your Device

Most app data stays on your phone or tablet and is not synced to Beardy Top Productions servers. This includes:

• Completed mitzvot in the classic Mitz Mode list
• Daily checklist completion state for the embedded Daily Mitzvot Checklist
• Lifetime checklist history for the Status tab (which checklist items you marked, and on which days) used for streaks, counts, and the Hebrew-month calendar
• Your profile and preferences (for example gender, nusach, marriage/family settings used to tailor checklist items, text size, notification toggles for prayer and mitzvah reminders, kashrut wait timers, Kotel compass visibility, and Israel calendar options)
• Location settings (GPS coordinates or manual city, timezone, and related labels) used for zmanim and the optional compass
• A per-day Israel vs. diaspora flag for days you open the app, used only on-device for calendar rules (one-day vs. two-day Yom Tov) on the Status calendar
• Custom checklist items you add
• Cached copies of publicly available mitzvah list updates
• Disclaimer acknowledgment, onboarding/tour flags, and similar on-device settings

Weekday siddur, blessings, and related liturgy text ship with the app (or as local assets) and are read on your device. Today’s checklist items generally reset at the start of a new Jewish day or calendar day as designed in the app. A separate lifetime history of those checks stays on your device for Status stats until you uninstall the app or restore a backup you choose. Some seasonal customs may keep a checked state across a short holiday window on your device only. Uninstalling the app removes locally stored data.

What We Do Not Collect for Our Own Use

• We do not sell your data
• We do not use advertising or marketing analytics
• We do not access your contacts, photo library, microphone, or call logs
• We do not require an account or login
• We do not offer in-app mitzvah submissions or collect names for that purpose
• We do not send your location, compass readings, checklist state, prayer text, or reminder schedules to Beardy Top Productions servers

Location Data

With your permission, the app uses GPS or a city you select to determine local sunrise, sunset, and halachic times, and (when the compass is shown) to aim toward the Kotel. Coordinates may also be used to infer whether you are in Israel for calendar rules (one-day vs. two-day Yom Tov). On days you open the app, it may store that Israel vs. diaspora setting for that civil date on your device so past Status calendar days keep the customs you used then. This information is kept on your device. It is not transmitted to Beardy Top Productions.

Sharing and History Backup

These steps happen only when you tap them. We do not upload the files to Beardy Top Productions.

• Save my history — writes a JSON backup of your lifetime mitzvah log to a folder you pick in the system Files picker
• Restore history — reads only the backup file you choose; new entries are added on this device and existing entries are not deleted
• Send history file / Share — opens the system share sheet with a history file and/or a stats image the app generates in its cache (not taken from your photo library). If you send that file or image to another app (Mail, WhatsApp, Files, and similar), that app’s privacy policy applies

Mitzvah Content Updates

• The app may download updated mitzvah list content from a public file hosted on GitHub (mitzvotcloud.json)
• This is a read-only content update; no personal information is sent in these requests
• A cached copy may be saved on your device so the list works offline

Daily Mitzvot Checklist & Prayer Tools

The embedded checklist helps track daily and seasonal mitzvot. The Status tab summarizes your on-device lifetime history (streaks, counts, and a Hebrew-month calendar). Prayer tools (weekday siddur, food blessings, Birkat Hamazon, and similar) use bundled liturgy on your device. Optional prayer and mitzvah reminders are scheduled locally on your device from your settings and zmanim. Profile, completion, and history data stay local (see Stored Locally on Your Device above) unless you choose to save or share a backup. The app is a learning companion and does not provide personal halachic rulings. External Torah resources open only when you tap a link.

Error Tracking

• We use Sentry to collect error and stability reports when the app experiences technical issues
• Reports may include:
  • Device model and operating system version
  • App version
  • Time and date of the event
  • Technical details about the error (stack traces, breadcrumbs, and similar diagnostic data)
• This data helps us identify and fix problems
• We do not intentionally include your name, email, or precise GPS coordinates in error reports
• Error data is automatically deleted after 90 days

Third-Party Services

• Sentry — error tracking
• GitHub — public hosting of mitzvah list updates
• External websites linked from the app (for example Torah resources) — each has its own privacy policy

Video and Media

• Videos included with the app are stored in the app package or local assets
• Optional background music uses bundled app media, not ad networks
• We do not track which videos you watch for advertising purposes

External Links

• The app may contain links to external websites
• When you open a link, you leave the app and are subject to that site's privacy policy and terms
• We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party websites

Children's Privacy

Our app is suitable for users of all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The app does not include submission forms that ask for a child's name or other personal details.

Data Deletion

• Most app data is stored locally on your device; uninstalling the app removes it
• Third-party services such as Sentry retain diagnostic data according to their own policies and our configuration (for example Sentry's 90-day error retention)

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
